Short division

Today in class we learned how to split big numbers into smaller parts using something called short division. Short division helps us do division faster. I like it because it’s simple and fast. Knowing your multiplication facts like 4 times 4 is 16 makes it easier to do.

Just like with addition, you must stack your numbers vertically. The larger number (the one you are starting with) always goes on top. The smaller number (the amount you are taking away) goes on the bottom. Keep your Ones, Tens, and Hundreds in perfectly straight columns. If addition is about “putting together,” subtraction is the art of “taking away.” While it might seem simple, subtracting large numbers can get tricky fast—especially when the top number is smaller than the bottom one!
